In October 2011, London hosted its first ‘Ladies Majority’ bike polo tournament at Newington Gardens, SE1. 19 teams from all over Europe and North America participated in the tournament, which required teams to either be comprised of all girls, or ‘female majority’ – 2/3s female.
The unseasonable sunny conditions made for a great weekend, and some outstanding polo played by both girls and boys.
The first place trophy (built by Robbie Hoops) was taken home to North America by ‘Fish and Chippies’ – Valley, Leslie and Seabass from Victoria and Seattle respectively. Second place went to ‘Penus Flytrap’ – Agata, Sabrina and Todd Cosmic (Poland/London) and third place went to the first all-girls team ‘Shotgun Sisters’ – Elena, Johanna and Anna (Geneva, Munster, Frankfurt).
The tournament was presented by:
Brooks moreover donated prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams. Each player from the first placed team received ‘Hampstead Hold-All’ bags; Second place received ‘Swift’ saddles; and third received ‘Victoria’ saddle handbags.
Our ‘silver sponsors’ were:
Chunk Clothing Co – who provided a tournament t-shirt for each registered player, and for tournament volunteers who helped up in the lead-up and during the event.
Rollapaluza – who generously donated a custom polo frame, built by Ryan McCaig at Oak Cycles, which was awarded to the Most Valuable Female of the tournament, Elena from The Shotgun Sisters.
Prizes were kindly donated by:
Waiting for the Sun – providing a pair of wooden sunglasses for each member of the first and last place teams. A special mention went to the last placed team, who got the ‘Up and Coming Award’, which meant Tabs, Ange and 13 year old Leah went home with some beautiful sunnies.
Rapha donated a £50 and £25 voucher for each player from the first and second place teams respectively; and for the Most Stylish Player (Bidou from ‘The Great Girls’ Bidou Show) who received a £100 voucher. Essentials packs also went to Best Ref (Ryan!) and Best Newcomer (Lish!).
Black Rainbow Project donated the Best Boy/’Mega-creep award’ – a prize for the most chivalrous male player went to London’s own Max Knight, who got a Black Rainbow Project hip pouch.
Pedro’s gave ‘Pit Kits’ to the second place team; and brush kits to the third placed team. They also provided each registered player in the tournament a bottle of ‘Green Fizz’ bike cleaner.
Jinxy Wheelcovers – The first placed team each got a custom Hell’s Belles wheelcover to adorn their victory bikes; and 8 more wheelcovers were given out to special individuals over the course of the weekend.
Look Mum No Hands cycle café kindly provided a special treat in every players’ registration pack.
